3 Tips for Storing Your Classic Car for the Winter

With summer finally winding down, it’s only a matter of time before winter is once again upon us. Although spring, summer, and fall are great seasons for taking classic vehicles out on the road, the same can’t be said for winter. The excessive moisture and abundant road salts this season brings make it a bad time for antique autos to be out and about. To ensure your vehicle remains safe until springtime rolls around, put the following winter storage tips to good use.

1. Give the Vehicle a Thorough Washing

Before proceeding to store antique cars for the winter, you’ll need to give them a thorough washing. Since this will be the last wash they’ll receive for nearly half a year, take care to be as meticulous as possible. While convenient, automatic washes are too rough for many classic vehicles, so make sure to wash the cars by hand or take them to a full-service car wash.

2. Have the Oil Changed

Once a classic car has been thoroughly cleaned, you’ll need to have both the oil and filter changed. This will dramatically reduce the risk of contaminants finding their way into the engine during its downtime.

3. Store in a Safe Place

Classic vehicles should be stored in dark, dry spaces throughout the winter. For best results, select a location with a concrete floor — like a garage or storage condo. Ideally, this place will feature minimum access, which will prevent insects, vermin, dirt, and moisture from finding their way into or onto your vehicle.
Winter is not a good time for the vehicles of yesteryear. If you live in a part of the country that’s prone to harsh wintertime weather, it’s in your best interest to put any classic cars you own in storage throughout the aforementioned season.
